I’m not a huge fan of boycotting anything. Mostly because if you wanted to get serious about that stuff, and did your research, you’d find out that you would have a hard time buying or doing anything without supporting a cause that goes against your beliefs.
One of my very few boycotts is that of Sirius Satellite Radio (It helps that I was already a subscriber to XM Radio). In 2004 they signed Howard Stern to a 5 year, $500 million dollar, contract to take his indecency to another level. That’s enough to make you hate Sirius right there. But they got their money’s worth. When Howard Stern signed on they had roughly 600,000 subscribers. Their initial goals were to increase that to 3.5 million by the end of 2006, due in a large part to Howards show.
They not only met their goals, they exceeded them. And in doing so, rewarded Mr. Stern with 22.1 million shares of Sirius as a bonus (about $83 million if you’re curious).
That’s sending a great message to our youth don’t you think? Hey, I’m all for free speech, but everyone knows there is a line that can be crossed when it’s not just a simple free speech issue anymore. This guy crosses the line when he gets up in the morning. And he’s getting paid randsomly to do so. Thanks Sirius.
