Unplugged

Tonia, Tanner and I are joining Joshua in this Unplugged Challenge.

So for seven days, beginning Monday, March 17 through Sunday, March 23 we will be unplugging while we are at home. No television. No movies. No email. No blogging. No twittering. No Facebook. No MySpace. No Flickr. No YouTube. No iPod. No internet. No computer. No video games. No texting. No phone calls.

Just the three of us doing life together.

I encourage you to join us. Obviously we all have responsibilities, be it work, school, whatever, that require you to use a phone and various forms of communication. This challenge applies to every thing OUTSIDE of your work/school day. This will look different for everyone. So you’re just going to have to be diligent on your own.

I think we’re really going to make a dent on our new basement project that week. Who knows, we may even learn something new about each other.

Archaic Theology

I was reading this article on WIRED yesterday about evolution and Mike Huckabee. It takes exception to Mikes answer of an evolution question during a recent debate. Despite the fact that most scientists claim that the earth is 4.5 billion years old, Mike said he doesn’t know.

The church seems to have a hang-up with the idea of an earth that’s been around for millions of years, but can’t that be true and still fall within the concept of a creator?

Do you believe that the earth is 4.5 billion years old?

How does your answer mesh with your faith or beliefs? …with science? …with your ability to make decisions? Do they make a point about Mike denying scientific evidence?

Mud Puppy Magazines

There are two must own magazines in my life. Both come accompanied with an equally sweet web presence. Both are leaders in change and innovation, and have flippin’ sweet design. Both would make great Christmas presents for anyone you know that loves to be on the cutting edge.

RELEVANT Magazine
www.relevantmagazine.com

RELEVANT is a bimonthly Christian magazine first published in 2003. It is a group of twentysomethings Christians who seek to break stereotypes, challenge status-quo and enact change through the media through exploring the intersection of faith and pop culture. They are a self-contained, for-profit business not affiliated with any other companies, denominations or organizations. A subscription runs around $12 per year.

WIRED Magazine
www.wired.com

WIRED is a monthly magazine first published in 1993. They are the first word on technology. Every month in the magazine and every day on the website, WIRED explores how ideas fueled by innovation change the world. Topics covered include culture, science, economy, technology, and politics. They are owned by Condé Nast Publications. A subscription runs around $10 per year.

RSS’n

I was a little behind in getting into RSS to begin with. And it seems that I’m late getting into RSS grouping as well!

My subscriptions were getting a little out of hand lately, so this morning I organized them all into groups. This is working out beautifully. I’m even in the hunt for a few more quality subscriptions now. Here are a few new ones that I recommend:

» lifehacker.com
» Logic + Emotion
» Brand New
» inavandownbytheriver.com

Reach For The Stars

While getting some torturous allergy testing done yesterday, I was able to read the latest issue of WIRED. I came across a cool article about the guy put in charge of finding ways to donate $1 billion of Google assets. This quote of his was very inspirational to me. I’ve always heard and tried to remember not to fear failure, but this guy puts a new twist on it. He expects failure to ensure his aspirations are high enough. So cool.

Do you expect some of your initiatives to fail?
God, I hope so. I am a technologist. If I have a 100 percent batting average, you should fire me, because it means we haven’t tried anything really noble.
