GoodFellas – Boy this one started out with a bang, eh? That’s some serious knife work Joe. Overall, a very tight movie. De Niro, Pesci and Liotta, combined with Scorsese, produced a great movie here. It was touted as the best mob movie of all time, and it was alright, but coming off watching the Godfathers, it wasn’t quite the best of all time. I’m not sure I’d watch it again either because every time I watch a movie like that a second time (Snatch, Reservoir Dogs) the violence and language seem to be worse. Having said all that, it was very entertaining and I’m glad that I’ve seen it. I’ve now heard that famous line in context, “You think I’m funny?”
Astronaut Farmer – This was a really nice story about not giving up on your dreams. A perfect family movie. Right on par with Disney’s The Rookie, only this wasn’t a true story. Billy Bob Thorton is a great actor and carried the movie. I wouldn’t be ashamed to recommend it to anyone.
Transformers – That more than meets the eye line was slightly corny, but I guess it had to be done. Otherwise this movie was a perfect summer action/humor, watch-on-a-bigscreen type blockbuster. I didn’t realize it was going to have so much humor in it, but I was laughing the whole time. Shia Labeouf is one of my favorite actors, and he did a great job in this movie as well. The Camaro is making a comeback apparently. I’m still in favor of the one in Better Off Dead, but this new Camaro isn’t too shabby.
Shooter – Everyone I talked to loved this movie so it had a big reputation going in, but it lived up to the hype. I don’t know why sharp shooters are so cool, but I’ve always loved them. And anytime you can shoot a guy in the eye while he’s looking through his scope, you’re doing something right. The whole movie had a Bourne Identity feel to it. They even left it open to franchise it should they feel the urge. My only complaint would be that most of the movie hinged on the fact that a beat cop couldn’t shoot someone in the back from point blank range. That was slightly flimsy.
Terminator 3 – The wife and I wrapped up the Terminator trilogy last night and we were laughing all night. Of course it started out with the obligatory butt shots. Arnolds one-liners were priceless too. I have to say I liked this one a lot better than T2. The storyline was much tighter and easier to follow. They easily explained a lot of situations, and the ending was tremendous. The way they set it up for John Conner to begin helping the human race was extremely well done. I’m looking forward to catching Terminator 4 soon. It’s a shame that Arnold won’t be in it though.
