Driving home on Saturday night I was thinking about how I’ve been trying to dump a lot of my “churchy” responsibilities. A lot of it has to do with a form of ADD I have as a result of being a military brat (I still feel like it’s time to move into a new house soon). Another part of it is because there are other things I’d like to focus on. And I’m sure another prevalent part is pure laziness.
Then I started thinking back to a conference I went to at Northridge in February. I remembered chatting with one of their A/V techs about how they put together videos for the service each week. They were part of a volunteer staff, and it sure seemed like they put in a lot more time than I did each week. Then I was reminded of some volunteers from our own church, and all the hours each week they put in.
That in turn lead me to the thought of tithing time. I’ve always heard sermons about tithing your money. And we’ve all heard countless lessons on giving of our time, but I don’t recall ever hearing the two combined. What would a time tithe look like? Well, I’ll tell you— 16.8 hours per week (168 hours per week x .10). I can with certainty tell you that I’m not tithing my time. Even if you account for worship on Sunday, daily prayers & bible study, I’m falling well short.
The human I am, I decided it might be unfair to include sleeping time into the equation. So if we account for 8 hours of sleep per day, we still end up with 112 total hours, and a time tithe of 11.2 hours per week.
Either way you cut it, I’m not cutting it. How are you doing? Are you making the grade? What do you think about this time tithing idea?
