Father and Son

Conversation on Tuesday, May 26, 2009 @ 7:23am during our morning commute.

Father: Do you know who you’re playing tonight?

Son: Yeah. Why?

Father: I didn’t know. I was wondering if you knew who it was.

Son: We’re playing the Orioles.

Son: We play the Orioles on Tuesdays. It’s a pattern dad. Orioles, then Tigers, then Marlins. Thursday we’re playing the Tigers.

Father: **Flabbergasted**

Son: **What is wrong with that guy?**

The Hits Keep Coming

I shouldn’t be surprised.

He was riding a bike without training wheels at three years old.

At four he was channeling Pelé.

And now this.

This past Saturday, at the mere age of 5, my boy Tanner ran his first 5K (that’s 3.1 miles btw). Not only did he run the entire course with me, but he also did it in 37 minutes 45 seconds. Finishing first in his rather large age group (1-10).

Congratulations Tanner!

A Brave New World

In a lot of ways this picture I took yesterday of Tanner, in his oversized backpack walking down the hall on his first day of Kindergarten, mirrors my current stage in life.

In the last few months I’ve been wrestling with the footprint I’m leaving in this life. I talk a ton about ideals and character, yet I’m doing very little of it myself. Just last night I was watching a documentary on Toms Shoes and thinking to myself how people like Blake Mycoskie completely get what it means to live out their lives in service to others—and thinking how tremendously I fail in doing that myself. I am constantly trying to perfect my life, while in the process neglecting the needs of those around me. That’s all got to change.

Like Tanner I have been adequately prepared to enter this new world of endless possibilities, and like Tanner I plan on facing this brave new world head on, and soaking up every second. Now I’ve just got to get a cool backpack to hold all my gear!

No Tanner, You Rock!

I had a hard time falling asleep last night. Too many things racing through my head. I ended up falling asleep on the couch around 3:00am as pundits talked about the Obama/Clinton situation.

When I woke up this morning Tanner told me he had a surprise for me hidden in the closet. He ran and retrieved the gift you see below. It says DAD ROCKS. He said it was supposed to be for Father’s Day but he just couldn’t wait that long.

Suddenly the worries of the world faded away.

The Natural

Tanner got to play his first soccer game last night.

It went well.

Bend It Like Tanner

Looking good at his first soccer practice.

Doing Work

Walked into my bathroom tonight to tell Tanner something…

Didn’t expect that.

Whobody Got Glasses

So Tanner got some glasses recently. It’s not an easy thing to get him to pose for pictures without making a Calvin type face.
