Observations at a Switchfoot Concert

A week ago Jason and I headed to Adrian College to see one of our favorite bands, Switchfoot. It was nearly a perfect concert, save a couple bozos behind us.

It started with dinner at Papa Johns. More precisely, the two of us splitting a pizza in my car in the parking lot at Papa Johns. When we were finished we drove a couple blocks and found a nice parking spot and walked over to the venue. It was a general admission show so we got there a little early to ensure a nice spot up front. Our patience paid off, and we were only four rows back from the stage.

The opening band was a group from Colorado named Meese. Turns out the name isn’t the plural of ‘moose’, but rather simply the last name of two of the members. Their sound wasn’t mixed very well, if at all, so it was pretty hard to tell if they were any good. There was one girl, who happened to be very sick due to food poisoning that day, that you could tell had a great voice. And they utilized a lot of keyboards, so that’s something. I still need to give them a legitimate listen, but at the concert it was not exactly inspiring.

After a set change Switchfoot took the stage and began a set that included every song from their new album, Hello Hurricane, and a bunch of the fan favorites from the rest of their discography. Jason aptly referred to it afterwards as a Greatest Hits show. I’ve seen a lot of concerts lately and this one was definitely up there with the best of them all. Switchfoot has catchy and rocking tunes, and Jon Foreman is an amazing front man, but Jason and I agreed that the thing that takes them over the edge is that their lyrics are head and shoulders above everything else out there.

Switchfoot made a conscious decision a long time ago to distance themselves from the so-called christian market and dive headfirst into the mainstream music scene. But they don’t shy away from writing and singing about stuff that they feel deeply about. Jon even mentioned that on stage that he only writes about things that challenge him—politics, religion, and girls.

“For us, these songs are for everyone. Calling us ‘Christian rock’ tends to be a box that closes some people out and excludes them. And that’s not what we’re trying to do. Music has always opened my mind — and that’s what we want”.

Which brings me back to the bozos. These guys behind us were extremely obnoxious and making very inappropriate comments during the first half of the show. But eventually I felt a shift and they stopped using that language, and then I started hearing them say to each other how great a song was, and how great the band is. All the while singing lyrics to songs like, “Maybe redemption has stories to tell. Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell. Where can you run to escape from yourself? Where you gonna go? Where you gonna go? Salvation is here.”

They left that show having been ministered to, whether they knew it or not. So while I was judging and critiquing the immaturity of the “bozos” behind us, Switchfoot was extending an olive branch, meeting them where they were, and inviting them into the life that we both find so fulfilling. Talk about a change in perspective!

“The selfish answer is that at the end of a songwriting process or a show, there’s an amazing feeling that you’ve got something off your chest. But the altruistic answer is that someone at the other end might have been changed or moved by your music. And belief in the transcendent God who created the universe is certainly not a prerequisite.”

Thank you Switchfoot, for the show and the lesson!

Bullet Soul

Bullet Soul — Switchfoot

[Embedded Audio]

I want to sing one for all the dreamers
I’m singing this one for the sparks
Here’s one for the friction makers
We are the bleeding hearts
Don’t care whoever you are

We rise and fall together
Our hearts still beat below
You can’t stand by forever
You’re a kid with a bullet soul
Are you ready to go?

I want to turn up the radiation
I want to glow in the dark
Love is the one true innovation
Love is the only art
Don’t let ‘em blow it apart

We rise and fall together
Our hearts still beat below
You can’t stand by forever
You’re a kid with a bullet soul
Are you ready to go?

Are you ready to go?
Are you ready to go?
Are you ready to go?

We are the children of the scar
We got to start from the start

We rise and fall together
Our hearts still beat below
You can’t stand by forever
You’re a kid with a bullet soul
Are you ready to go?

Are you ready to go?
Are you ready to go?
Are you ready to go?

Jon Foreman – Summer

Jon Foreman’s fourth and final EP in his solo project, Summer, was released yesterday. As with the previous EP’s Fall, Winter, and Spring, this album is chock full of soulful reflection.

1. A Mirror Is Harder to Hold

“I could try to point the finger but the glass points in my direction.”

2. Resurrect Me

“I’ve become an empty shell of a man I liked so well.”

3. Deep In Your Eyes

“There’s a river in my veins. It’s been looking for you.”

4. Instead of a Show

“Quit playing religion games. There’s blood on your hands.”

5. The House of God Forever

“God is my Shepherd. I won’t be wanting.”

6. Again

“You are God of the present tense.”

I’ve really enjoyed this side project by Jon. Summer could be the best of the four when it’s all said and done. After listening through a few times I really enjoy the flow. Every track has a feel of its own. Resurrect Me might be my favorite of the entire project with its uptempo feel. It could easily be on a Switchfoot album. And the final song of the final EP, Again, wraps it all up beautifully as we are “turning our hearts back You, again.” The only thing that feels awkward is the fifth track, Instead of a Show. But then again, I’m not sure it would feel comfortable in any lineup.

As a matter of fact, let’s use that song as a catalyst for your opportunity to own this EP for FREE. Leave me a comment with your feelings on Instead of a Show. You can listen to and read the lyrics here. On Monday night I’ll chose a random comment and mail you your own copy of Summer.

I Convicted Myself This Morning

It happens all the time.

This morning I was a witness to one of the best lessons in NewSong history. It centered around our time here on earth, and using it wisely (this was the intro bumper video).

It was very inspirational, and a call to action.

So being on the A/V team I qued up Dare You To Move by Switchfoot to play as church let out. I love that song and wanted to subtly encourage people to move. To act on what they just heard. Anyway, I was sitting there smiling and listening to the lyrics, and glanced over toward one of the doors and saw someone I had never seen before standing all by herself. She looked like she was in her 20′s and had a disability that required her to use crutches to walk.

I watched as, one by one, people kept walking past her. I allowed myself to judge those ignoring her for almost a full minute. But those haunting lyrics stopped being a gorgeous melody, and became self-convicting.

The tension is here
Between who you are and who you could be
Between how it is and how it should be
I dare you to move

I smacked myself in the head and went over and said hello. I swear that three minute conversation was life-changing. I’m having a hard time describing in words the smile on her face as we chatted about college and ice storms. I have no doubt in my mind that God placed her there for me this morning.

For me to encourage her.

For her to encourage me.

For God to teach me to move.

Northern Room

northernroom.jpg

Made up of Andrew Jonathen (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard), Tony Olla (guitar, keyboards), Micah Olla (bass, keyboards), and Michael Morgan (drums), these Wisconsin natives jumped on the scene in 2006 with their Last Embrace EP, adding the Only Seconds EP the following year. Since then they have released their first full length album, Last Embrace: Deluxe Edition. The deluxe edition includes all ten songs from the two previous EP’s, Live acoustic versions of Last Embrace, A Witness, and We’re On Fire, as well as the previously unreleased, Home.

I first ran across Northern Room when they were mentioned in the same breath as Mute Math on another blog. While there are occasional hints of Mute Math in their music, I think a more accurate comparison would be with Switchfoot. More specifically, the lead singer can be mistaken for Jon Foreman quite easily.

It’s rare that I enjoy an album the first time through, but Last Embrace hooked me coming out of the box. We’re On Fire is an instant single, worthy of heavy radio play (download free here). From that hot opener you begin a journey back into a more melodious feel. But don’t let that fool you into thinking you’re going to be listening to Jack Johnson, these guys rock your face off with aggressive beats, ambience, and stellar vocals.

This is one of the easiest recommends I’ve ever had, especially if you’re a fan of Switchfoot and Mute Math. Honestly, do yourself a favor and go out and buy this album. If you’re lucky, go catch them in concert. I know I’ll be hitting them up the first time they hit my area!

On a side note, I have an opportunity to interview the band, so look for that in the near future. If you have any questions you want me to ask the boys leave them in the comments and I’ll see what I can do.

The Music of 2007

Here’s a quick recap of the music that rocked my face off this year.

Mute Math — Their self-titled album didn’t come out in 2007, but they’ve been the number one thing reverberating through my ears this year. I’ve been lucky enough to see them live thrice, with a very real possibility of getting on the guest list for their show on December 17. Their new album can’t come out quick enough!

The Cinematics — I discovered these guys when they opened for Mute Math earlier this year. Since then they shot up to one of my favorite bands. Their first album, A Strange Education, is great from top to bottom. I really hope they get huge because I’d love to say I was there when it all started. Do yourself a huge favor and go buy their album!

Robbie Seay Band — These guys have been around for awhile, but it wasn’t until the free download of their newest release, Give Yourself Away, that I became a huge fan. I can honestly say that this is one of the best CCM albums I own. And that’s saying a lot coming from me.

Lifehouse —  Jason kept pumping us up about the impending release of Who We Are. So much so that you’d expect a let down. Well, not only was I not let down, but like Lebron James exceeded the hype in Cleveland, this new album is amazingly better than expected.

Here are a few things to look out for in 2008.

Jon Foreman — Jon has been releasing some softer solo stuff on EP’s recently, with plans for a couple more. I’m waiting for the entire album but, from the stuff I’ve heard so far, this stuff will be getting heavy rotation on my iTunes.

Northern Room — Accidentally discovered this group last week and I’m loving what I’m hearing. The similarities to Switchfoot are eery. I can see these guys taking off quickly! There’s very little out there on them now, but check out The Blah Blah for a little history.

Renovaudio — My boy Blake just returned from a recording session in Nashville. They’re working with a guy that helped produce Mute Math. As a matter of fact, Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas played bass for them while they were recording. Blake said their new stuff has strong influences from Muse. I expect huge things from these guys in the not too distant future.

Northern Room – Similar to Mute Math and Switchfoot. I’ve listened to them and I’m pretty stoked about what I’ve heard so far. You can also download a free song on their website. – Listen Here

U2 — They are currently working on a new album. Here is a little blurb from Bono concerning its content:

“But don’t fret, fans of 1997′s Pop, for the forthcoming LP isn’t all world music, and may even heat up the dance floor. “Normally when you play a U2 tune, it clears the dance floor,” Bono claimed. “And that may not be true of this [new material]. There’s some trance influences. But there’s some very hardcore guitar coming out of the Edge. Real molten metal. It’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, and we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.”

Last but not least, here are three separate posts with their picks for the best albums from 2007.

Rebuild

I’m a week behind Worship City on this one, but it’s definitely worth another mention. Switchfoot recently combined with Relient K and Ruth on a song specifically for their Appetite for Construction tour, where a dollar from each ticket sold will go to Habitat for Humanity. The song, (written with Habitat in mind) was called Rebuild.

Since starting the tour they decided that wasn’t a broad enough reach. You can now download the song, and give your money, or your time, directly to Habitat for Humanity. You choose how much, or how little, you wish to give. Shoot, you can even download it for free if you feel like it. Gotta love that!

Awakening

Awakening — Switchfoot

Face down with the LA curbside ending
In the ones and zeros.
Downtown was the perfect place to hide.
The first star that I saw last night was a headlight
of a man-made sky, but
Man-made never made our dreams collide.

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We’re awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We’re awakening
Maybe it’s called ambition, but you’ve been talking in your sleep
About a dream, We’re awakening

Last week saw me living for nothing but deadlines,
With my dead beat sky but, this town doesn’t look the same tonight
These dreams started singing to me out of nowhere
And in all my life I don’t know that I’ve ever felt so alive, alive

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We’re awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We’re awakening
Maybe it’s called ambition, but you’ve been talking in your sleep
About a dream, We’re awakening

I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to know that my heart’s still beating,
It’s beating, I’m bleeding.
I want to wake up kicking and screaming
I want to live like I know what I’m leaving
I want to know that my heart’s still beating,
Is beating, Is beating, It’s beating, I’m bleeding

Here we are now with the falling sky and the rain,
We’re awakening
Here we are now with the desperate youth in pain,
We’re awakening
Maybe it’s called ambition, but you’ve been talk, talking in your sleep
About a dream, We’re awakening dream, We’re awakening

Switchfoot Thursday

Maybe redemption has stories to tell
Maybe forgiveness is right where you fell
Where can you run to escape from yourself?
Where you gonna go?
Where you gonna go?
Salvation is here

You ever have an album hit you in the right spot at the right time? The perfect words, and the perfect music, at the perfect time, that just speaks to your soul? The Beautiful Letdown by Switchfoot was such an album for me a couple years ago. I could (and did) listen to this album straight through, over, and over, and over…

Enjoy some of these big hitters.
