Shawn McDonald — Roots

It’s fun to be onto something from the beginning, and then watch it develop and grow. Ever since Shawn McDonalds first album Simply Nothing dropped I’ve been a huge fan. Now in this his third studio release it’s amazing to see how far he’s come. Especially considering how much I loved his first album.

The first words that came to me after listening to Roots a few times are Laid Back, Soulful, Layered. One of the things Shawn has always had knack for is his insightfully raw and inspiring lyrics. More than most, Shawn’s songs are beautiful little poems drawn from his own life experiences, accompanied by a simple acoustic guitar.

I imagined myself laying on a hammock sipping an Arnold Palmer during Slow Down. And that is exactly what this album is perfect for. For all the times I need to just slow down and meditate. Roots will take you to the place where you need to be when life seems to be moving too fast.

Shawn McDonald

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted on Shawn McDonald, one of my favorite CCM artists. A few years ago I was millimeters away from finalizing having him come to our town during his tour. I own all of his albums. His first album, Simply Nothing, is one of those albums I can listen to straight through, and then start it over again. His newest album, Roots, looks to be just as great.

Check out his new song Captivated on his MySpace page.

On his first live album he tells his story about how he came to be not only a christian, but a musician. It’s an awesome story and one of the reasons I’m drawn to him and his music. Recently he’s been keeping it just as real. He is currently taking a break from touring to spend more time with his family and to re-calibrate his relationship with God. (You can read about that on his MySpace page too).

Hold On

Hold OnShawn McDonald

Another day gone by
And again I ask myself why
I question my sanity
Why I believe what I believe
Some might think that I am crazy
For believing in something I cannot see
So won’t You now
Hold on to me, Hold on
Hold on to me, yeah
Please don’t let me go no, no, Hold on
‘Cause I am prone to wonder
Prone to leave this faith I know
Hold on

And now they say that the wise man
Well, he fears the Lord
And this fear, well, it’s the beginning of all wisdom
And I must be a fool
‘Cause I sure don’t seem to fear You
‘Cause the very things that You will me to do
Well, I just don’t seem to get around to
The very things that You hate
Are the very things that I always stumble into
So won’t You now
Hold on to me, Hold on
Hold on to me, yeah
Please don’t let me go no, no, Hold on
‘Cause I am prone to wonder
Prone to leave this faith I know
Hold on, Hold on, Hold on to me, Hold on

‘Cause I am prone to leave this faith I know
Prone to leave this God I love
Won’t You hold on
Won’t You hold on to me
