One of my favorite authors, Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz and Searching For God Knows What, will be speaking at Mars Hill Bible Church this Sunday. Mars Hill being the church that Rob Bell (speaker on the Nooma series) is the pastor of. They are located in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
They have three identical gatherings on Sundays — 9am, 11am & 6pm.
I’m pretty sure it’s short notice to get many (if any) to drive up there with me for a morning service, but perhaps we can get a group for the 6pm service.
Anyone interested???

I’m about to post some breaking news. Something you can’t find anywhere on the internet…yet.
You might have known that Jason and his wife joined my family for a trek over to Mars Hill Bible Church last Sunday to hear Rob Bell and worship with the David Crowder Band. It was as amazing, as you might expect. Quite packed too. Even with all the visitors, I felt more like a local than most because I avoided a mile long line at a traffic light by taking a back street, as well as having a Love Wins bumper sticker and a Michigan license plate.
During the service I heard a song that I had never heard before and have spent the last three days trying to figure out what it was, who wrote it, where I can listen to it again, etc. I even emailed Mars Hill and they didn’t know. My email to the David Crowder Band was extremely successful however! Today I received word, via Jack Parker (Guitar, Banjo), that the song in question was a new song that will be on both their new album as well as the new Passion 07 album.
So my friends—listen when I tell you—when this song comes out, remember who told you that it will be the best song you hear this year! I don’t know what they’ll name it, but here is a line from the song:
“Oh, the glory of it all
That You came here
For the rescue of us all
That we may live for the glory of it all.”
I should also let you know that Mr. Crowder is not as short as he appears in this picture. He was sort of squatting down on a chair to allow the ladies, and maniac, to be seen in the picture too. He’s probably a good 6′ 2″.
UPDATE: I found some more information on the song, as well as guitar tabbed lyrics. Check it out.

It’s amazing how much fun you can have in such a short amount of time. I still can’t believe that I wasn’t gone for more than the measly 30 hours. I won’t bore you with tons of details, but I will recommend some places to visit if you ever get a chance.
The first place is Binder Park Zoo. Although I love zoos and go to all I can, I’ve often held the position that most zoo’s are done in bad taste because of the environment the animals must live in, but this particular zoo was so different than what I’m used to. It felt really natural (as natural as a giraffe in Michigan could be) and it was very well done. Attention to detail must have been top priority.
Secondly, I recommend that the next time you’re up near the Grand Rapids, Michigan area you check out Mars Hill Bible Church, the home church of pastor Rob Bell of the Nooma videos. It’s pretty neat having a worship service in an old mall. It’s also pretty neat when the pastor speaks on something you’ve been blogging about earlier in the week. If you get a chance, you can download and listen to it yourself here. In fact, he’s inspired me into doing a little mini-series based on the Nooma videos next week. Perhaps tomorrow I’ll try to post more specifically on what he was talking about yesterday.
Well, all in all, it was a great way to celebrate our 7th anniversary, How cool is Tanner on the rock wall?!

If you’ve read Velvet Elvis, watched a NOOMA, or listened to Mars Hill Bible Church teachings online, you may be interested in hearing Rob Bell speak in a city near you.
Bell’s ‘Everything Is Spiritual‘ tour launches on June 30, 2006 in Chicago and will be in a different city every night through the end of July.
All proceeds from the tour will go to WaterAid.
