Tanner got to play his first soccer game last night.
It went well.

This made me laugh recently while in the library.

Bill Watterson was a genius. And my son is a spitting image of Calvin—in both wit and wisdom.

“Mom, for Mother’s Day I’m going to give you some flowers and a card. They’re going to be in my bedroom and it’s a secret.”

Jason and I had the great opportunity of taking some pictures of Tanner, and his cousin Jacob, last week for some advertising. It went as well as could be expected with a couple of 4-year-olds who like to play off each other, but I think the ads are going to turn out nicely. I’ll tell you one thing, I have major respect for child photographers!
Tanner has been spending way too much time at ragamuffinsoul.com.

Tanner and I now have a sweet Summer project lined up—we’re going to build this cardboard spaceship. There are simplified instructions free on the site, or more detailed plans and materials for $25. The site also offers advice on scoring free cardboard boxes, as well as tips for painting and detailing.
Now if we can only get the cold weather to disappear.

Tanner, who turned 4 in July, has been really using his new adjective a lot lately. Tonia and I both love it too much to correct his usage, so everyday is another opportunity to see it used in a new way.
The adjective? Soakin’.
Apparently he took soakin’ (from soakin’ wet) and made it a universal adjective meaning ‘extremely.’
So this morning he told me it was soakin’ dark in the room. A couple days ago while trying to pick up a dumbell, he told me it was soakin’ heavy. Of course, it’s soakin’ cold outside most mornings.
My son is soakin’ funny!

For the life of me I can’t figure out why there are so many loser dads out there. I look at my son and I can’t imagine anything that I would not do for him. Even when he gets a little crazy, and I get a little upset, I can’t stay mad at him long. He is as pure and innocent as it gets.
Yet there are so many men that deny their responsibilities. Not only that, there are a ton that don’t even care. And don’t get me started on the abusive ones.
…How? …Why?
I know there are passed down traits, but that kind of thing can be fixed. My dad is living proof. I am forever in debt to my father for putting a stop to what could have been a heritage of neglect. It’s my goal to continue this new heritage of love and responsibility. I wish I knew how to instill that thinking in other men out there.
Tanners mom and I are a team, so it’s not just the two of us like it is in Will Smiths scenario, but there is so much truth in this song concerning dads that it always gets me choked up.
