Movie Reviews

Number 23 — I had high hopes for this one. 23 has long been my favorite number. However it won’t be one I’ll soon watch again. I’ve always enjoyed Jim Carrey films. He’s a much better actor than he gets credit for. But this movie wasn’t for him. I agree with one critics sentiment that a lesser known actor would have made this a better movie. But it would still be lacking in major areas along the plot. It’s not Cable Man by any means, but it’s a far cry from Eternal Sunshine.

Garden State — I started watching this when it first came out on DVD and had to stop in the middle and never got back to it. I’m glad I finally got a chance to see the ending. Zach Braff is a genius. Between his stuff on Scrubs and his complete control over this movie, this kid has quite the future ahead of him. And we are going to be the lucky recipients. I’ve found myself leaning toward these types of movies. Deep, dialog driven-type movies with meaning. I still love the Die Hard films, it’s just that I’ve found a new appreciation for movies with depth. (Thanks Wes Anderson.)

Raging Bull — Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese did it again. I thought Joe Pesci was excellent too. I can see why this is rated as one of the best sports films of all time. The funny thing is, there wasn’t much action in the ring. Perhaps that’s why it was so good. It took a lot of time telling the back story. It’s a shame that it was a true story. Jake LaMotta sure had some insecurity issues. I loved how the brother stuck up for him at all times. Well, at least until… well, you know. Overall, good movie, but the original Rocky is still safe at the top my favorite sports movie list.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels — Madonna’s husband makes some good movies. People weren’t kidding when they said this was the original Snatch though. It was almost identical, but that’s OK. Guy does a great job of tying little individual stories into one big story. Sort of like the late seasons of Seinfeld in that regard. For some reason I’ve only liked Jason Statham in these two movies, and not his other stuff. Another Guy Ritchie trademark is an excellent soundtrack, and this movie had a great one as well.

Little Miss Sunshine — Watched this last night with the Mrs. and we had a ball. Great story and great acting. It was kind of ironic that Greg Kinnear was in a movie that had a gay guy, and it wasn’t him. Anyway, I really liked the individual characters, and their interaction with each other. Determination and belief in self is the overwhelming theme here and I really enjoyed the way they put it together. Of course Abigail Breslin stole the show. And her act at the end was priceless. Great movie.

I re-watched Batman as well, and that movie was as good as it was when I saw it in the theater. I’m on the prowl to add this one to my collection.
