Here’s where I fall on where the line is. If we don’t know anything is going on around us, what good are we? If we do know and don’t do anything, what good are we? It’s not good enough to just know that these things are going on, we must actively seek ways to effect change. Even if all we can do is pray specifically then that is more than good enough. But I would venture to say that all of us have the ability to meet practical needs and we don’t for one reason or another. I like what Kay Warren wrote for CNN recently regarding the role of a Christian in the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
You can do what I did for years — choose to ignore it all because it was too painful — or you can become disturbed — seriously, dangerously disturbed — so disturbed that you are compelled to do something.
Christians are just as guilty as non-Christians of wanting to look the other way when it comes to the problems confronting our world, the topics that make us uncomfortable. But we need to be seriously disturbed about homelessness, child prostitution, rape, poverty, injustice, and HIV/AIDS.
Twenty-five years into the AIDS pandemic, being HIV-positive still carries stigma and shame. But God cares for the sick and so must we.
