Hesed is a Hebrew word, which is translated as “loving-kindness,” or “mercy,” in the Old Testament. The Hebrew spelling would be “chesed” and pronounced “kheh’sed”. It literally means unconditional love. When God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten son, He poured out His hesed on the world.
• The consistent, ever-faithful, relentless, constantly-pursuing, lavish, extravagant, unrestrained, furious love of our Father God!
• Psalm 136 declares God’s hesed love in every one of its 26 verses, and implies a strong sense of loyalty similar to that of blood relationship.
• Hesed is God’s strong, loyal, masculine love for those he has made his kinsmen!
• Hesed is the very thing that God, who practices it, requires between one person and another.
• Hesed love, a covenant love, an enduring love, is one that sticks by the relationship no matter what it takes. It is closely mimicked by the love represented in a marriage commitment.
• When in the Old Testament the word ‘hesed’ is used of the Lord, this always occurs in connection with the covenant that God established with Israel. This covenant was, on God’s part, a gift and a grace for Israel…God had made a commitment to respect it…[this divine 'hesed'] showed itself as what it was at the beginning, that is, as a love that gives, love more powerful than betrayal, grace stronger than sin.
