Incase any of you were wondering why I have that little birdcage image on the right side of my blog, here’s a little explanation. Derek Webb is a singer-songwriter, and a former member of the band Caedmon’s Call. Since going solo he has turned some heads with his slightly controversial lyrics. He is so passionate about what he writes about that he wants everybody to hear his latest album, Mockingbird, even if he has to give it away for free.
My most recent record ‘mockingbird’ deals with many sensitive issues including poverty, war, and the basic ethics by which we live and deal with others. But I found that music has been an exceptional means by which to get this potentially difficult conversation going. And this is certainly an important moment for dialogue amongst people who disagree about how to best love and take care of people, to get into the nuances of the issues. —Derek Webb
I haven’t heard any of his previous work, and I’ve only heard one song from this particular album, but I look forward to hearing what he has to say, and how he chooses to say it. And I applaud him for not being so caught up in making more cash and using this platform to distribute a message he feels strongly about.
