When Jesus said what we now call the Golden Rule, what he was actually doing was improving on a saying that had been popular at that time.
“What you do not want done to you, do not do to others.” –Confucius
This wasn’t an original thought or premise, but the difference is that Jesus put a positive, active spin on it.
“Do unto others what you would have them do unto you.” –Jesus
We aren’t just supposed to sit around and be nice and make sure we are politically correct. We are supposed to GO. We are supposed to DO. Whatever we would want done to us—visits from friends, love, prayers, fellowship, a new car—we need to do those things for others. Imagine would the world would be like if we actually did things to others we wanted do for us.
What a wise man.
