The Original Mud Puppy

Order has been restored.

Once again I have in my possession a copy of Mute Math’s first EP, Reset. Released in September 2004, this seven track EP raised some eyebrows. Mute Math immediately started receiving comparisons to U2 and The Police. There are three songs on this album you won’t find anywhere else. Peculiar People, OK, and Progress. Two of which I’ve posted on this blog. (here and here).

I got in early with Mute Math so I had an original copy a year ago. But I let a good friend borrow it, and it never made it’s way back due to some munchkins using it as a bath toy. No big deal, that comes with the territory. So I jumped on Amazon.com to get a new copy and, from what I can tell, they are no longer producing this album. Checking the alternate venues revealed that due to it’s rarity, I’d have to pay $30 – $40 to replace this album.

Although it’s rarity only made me want it more, I just couldn’t pull the trigger. I still had all the music stored on my computer, the purchase would be simply for collection purposes. That was until recently when the moons aligned and the prices fluctuated enough that I was able to snag a still-in-the-wrapper copy. Yesterday I received my new copy and I am no longer thinking about my long lost album.

Am I insane for spending $21.36 on album that I still had a digital copy of? I feel like I’m a bit crazy, but this is one of those “desert island” albums in my book. And there is nothing like having the real album in your possession. This must be similar to what the hippies feel about vinyl.

My current mission is to replace the Live at the El Rey 2006 EP that was included in first 25,000 copies of their first full album. That disc was lost in the wreckage as well, and is also not being produced any longer.
