At NewSong we’re covering the idea that the church is the hope of the world (when it’s working right). And it’s not by just grabbing everyone we see and slam dunking them into a baptistry. It’s by demonstrating and living out the mandate of Jesus—loving others.
I was reading of an example of someone loving others this weekend in the latest issue of Relevant Magazine. His name is Blake Mycoskie, and he is the founder of TOMS shoes. Here are a couple of quotes about his business, and mission:
I was in Argentina on vacation and came across the extreme poverty outside the city. Many kids did not have shoes, and I thought, what if I took the traditional Argentine shoe, redesigned it for the USA and made a commitment to give one pair of shoes to a child in need for every pair I sold? That was the idea-very simple-and it stuck.
We made a commitment to give “our first fruits”, and we gave away 10,000 pairs before making a profit. I believe our recent success is a result of that blessing.
I wanted to do something that was bigger than me, something that seemed impossible and something that would emulate what Christ would do if He were an entrepreneur.
Yeah, this dude is getting it right on so many levels.
