Come Together

The more I see or hear about the “evangelicals” in the news, the more I want to hide in my basement.

Today is the final day in Rick Warren’s Global Summit on AIDS, and of the many speakers he has for the event, one of them, Barack Obama, is drawing all kinds of fire from those “evangelicals.”

They claim that his stance on abortion negates anything he might be able to say in regard to the AIDS crisis. How dare Rick Warren invite someone that isn’t perfect to speak. What was he thinking? I swear we are making it harder and harder to make any progress around here. Let’s applaude Rick for not backing down to partisan politics.

As Obama takes the stage today to discuss the global crisis of AIDS, please try to remember that not all that wear the name Christian are quite so short-sighted. We don’t have to be a republican, a democrat, pro-life or pro-choice to contribute to this world. As a matter of fact it’s quite the opposite, we all need to come together if we’re going to make a difference.

Reminds me of a song by Third Day.

Where’s the line? pt.2

Here’s where I fall on where the line is. If we don’t know anything is going on around us, what good are we? If we do know and don’t do anything, what good are we? It’s not good enough to just know that these things are going on, we must actively seek ways to effect change. Even if all we can do is pray specifically then that is more than good enough. But I would venture to say that all of us have the ability to meet practical needs and we don’t for one reason or another. I like what Kay Warren wrote for CNN recently regarding the role of a Christian in the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

You can do what I did for years — choose to ignore it all because it was too painful — or you can become disturbed — seriously, dangerously disturbed — so disturbed that you are compelled to do something.

Christians are just as guilty as non-Christians of wanting to look the other way when it comes to the problems confronting our world, the topics that make us uncomfortable. But we need to be seriously disturbed about homelessness, child prostitution, rape, poverty, injustice, and HIV/AIDS.

Twenty-five years into the AIDS pandemic, being HIV-positive still carries stigma and shame. But God cares for the sick and so must we.
