Laminin

Back in February 2007 I went to a Chris Tomlin & Matt Redman concert, and Louie Giglio gave a talk about the expansiveness of the universe (video clip). The climax of his talk came when he revealed a picture of Laminin. Laminin is a protein in our body that literally holds our skin, organs, and everything else in our body, in place. It is described as rebar of the human body—it holds us all together.

In the last 12 months more people have come to my site as a result of searching for Laminin than by any other term. Actually if you add up the results of the next ten searches you’d get the total for that one word search. It’s kinda bananas.

I always love listening to Louie speak, and the visuals he had of the universe were amazing, but I remember distinctly asking my buddy on the drive home about the idea of Laminin being the stuff that holds us all together shaped as a cross. While I enjoy the coincidence of it, thinking that God designed it that way on purpose leads me to believe that he expected man to fall at the very start, making the cross necessary. Did he know all along? Did he alter our chemistry after the fact? Was it just a coincidence that made for a nice visual?

He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. —Colossians 1:15-17

Do you have any search engine terms that rise above the rest?

I know you already saw this on my blog, but for whatever reason people find my blog the most when searching for Jodie Sweetin, who played Stephanie on Full House.

@shanebertou: That was probably my son Tanner.

Ironically the families in Full House and Alf were both named Tanner.

It’s a poetic metaphor, but …

The cross is a rather simple form, so its appearance in nature is unsurprising. Laminin’s helix allows us to make a more astonishing comparison, actually: it looks an awful lot like a caduceus. Is someone trying to tell us something about the Greek god Hermes? I don’t think so. Correlation does not imply causation.

If God wanted to reveal Himself in this way, wouldn’t He be less ambiguous? In the end, we see what we want to see.

Believing is seeing

  Mike wrote @

I think I know what you’re getting at, but it strikes me as an unsound application of belief.

“While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.” (2 Corinthians 4:18)

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)

It’s one thing to use faith to inform your understanding of things that cannot be seen. It’s another thing entirely to use faith to forgive a logical fallacy, or to modify a rational view of reality.

In a way, believing is seeing. Just not in this way.

What I love about Louie Giglio is is his enthusiasm and childlike wonder and recognition of the Creator’s handiwork in the natural world. It’s an entirely Christian approach to science, and much more interesting and motivating than the boring mechanistic flatland approach approved by the committed secular materialists in the towers of academe. In fact the western enterprise of science would be vastly different without the grounding judeo-christian faith in a coherent God and a logical universe. But having said that I will echo previous commenters, and say that finding a “cross” in a molecule or a galactic core does not constitute proof upon which a faith should be grounded. Nonetheless on balance it is entirely reasonable to believe in a Creator given the vast array of beauty and harmony of the cosmos, and the complexity and intricate design required to create Life.

For those that don’t believe in Christ and that he is the son of the living God, this discovery will not make any sense at all. As for me when I watched this video his spirit beareth witness with my spirit and that spirit let me know that He is the one. Someone asked the question above why would God reveal himself in this way? I believe that some of us that are pretty much simple minded can get It by faith that God is Real, and then there are the show me, let me touch, let me see, people that He has to deal with. When Christ died on the cross he died for all, not some, ALL.

Totally agree that what we SEE is not what we base our faith upon. Faith is our acceptance of God’s historic fact. (“Normal Christian Life” – by Watchman Nee). I like that perspective. Faith has its roots in the past. That’s probably one of the reasons God had to keep telling us knotheads to REMEMBER His marvelous works and to keep telling and encouraging each other with these words. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.

Hope (as it’s used in the Bible, not in our common usage today) is the same thing as faith, but viewed from the other side of the timeline. If we remember all the great things God has done in the past that proves His love for us, knowing He is the same yesterday, today and forever, we will be filled with hope (confident assurance – future tense) for tomorrow. Paul says that only three things will remain: faith, hope, and love. I like to say that these are the same concept, but in past tense, future tense, and present tense. (which is why I’m not an English teacher). Yes, I know that is flawed or at best, incomplete, but at least a different perspective.

Seeing isn’t the basis of our faith. Relationship with God is. But it can also be reassuring to see confirmation from time to time. :-)

If you want to see some awesome information on the topic of molecular biology, get in on The Truth Project – by Del Tackett and Focus On The Family. Specifically, lesson 5 deals with intelligent design and some of the problems with evolution. No doubt we are fearfully and wonderfully made!

The Pearl of Great Price ( Book of Moses) adds another witness:
Chapter 6 v.63
“And behold, all things have their likeness, and all things are created and made to bear record of me, both things which are temporal, and things which are spiritual; things which are in the heavens above, and things which are on the earth, and things which are in the earth, and things which are under the earth, both above and beneath: all things bear record of me.”
Jesus Christ speaking to Adam (after the Fall) taught by Enoch. Translated by Joseph Smith Jr.

The Holy Spirit will testify of the truth to us. He is also a witness for Jesus Christ.
To the person who asked, is this evidence that God had this planned ahead of time (before we came to this earth) YES! Read about it in the Book of Moses and the Book of Abraham.

Why aren’t we talking about the incredible shape of the alpha helix of DNA? It looks like a ladder, and Jacob saw angels ascending and descending to heaven on a ladder! God clearly wants us to remember ladders!

This kind of conversation makes us(Christians) look like idiots. As St. Augustine said:

Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of this world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions, about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and the seasons, about the kinds of animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth, and this knowledge he hold to as being certain from reason and experience.

Now, it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics; and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn.

The shame is not so much that an ignorant individual is derided, but that people outside the household of faith think our sacred writers held such opinions, and, to the great loss of those for whose salvation we toil, the writers of our Scripture are criticized and rejected as unlearned men. If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods and on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason?

Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books. For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion. [1 Timothy 1.7]

  Elizabeth wrote @

Oh my goodness, you can’t be using Augustine’s reasoning here to make your point about how Christians look like “idiots” (shame on you for being so prideful as to scoff at those of us who appreciate seeing God everywhere, yes, even in Laminin). Don’t you realize that Augustine and all the leaders of organized Christianity (the counterfiet Christiantiy) used that argument to keep people from being allowed to read Scripture for themselves? And it is for this reason that men, centuries later, were burned alive and otherwise tortured for translating the Bible and printing the Bible in the common language for all men to read. Until the Bible translators (thank God for them!), mankind was kept in darkness and had to rely on priests to tell them what the Bible said, lest they get some crazy fool idea about God and begin to teach heresy. This is how the “church fathers” kept people subserviant, in chains. This is how they were able to extort them with introducing ideas like selling indulgences. Sure, just say it’s in the Bible! The people will never know! Your argument, therefore, is just as appalling as applauding a tyrant for keeping the people from establishing a representative form of government. Good Lord! What if the people do something that would threaten the monarchy? What if they introduce dangerous ideas like God gives rights unto men, not princes or parliaments, among which are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness? Heaven forbid mankind should ever learn to read or think for himself. He might introduce a bad idea or a wrong supposition that could lead people to rebel against their religious overlords and take MONEY away from the church. Hmmm….

Hey guys, I just found out that the Jesus protein isn’t always up to good in your body, read this-

“Under the direction of neurosurgeon Keith L. Black, M.D., chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Cedars-Sinai and director of the institute, the research teams have compiled a series of “firsts” over the past decade. They recently: … Found that laminin-411, a protein that is synthesized by tumor cells and deposited in newly formed tumor blood vessels, is over-expressed in human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). Subsequently, the researchers found they could reduce a tumor’s ability to invade neighboring tissue by blocking the expression of laminin-411, and they identified over-expression of laminin-411 as a predictor of tumor grade and potential for recurrence, as well as patient length of survival.”

As to your initial question, “…thinking that God designed it that way on purpose leads me to believe that he expected man to fall at the very start, making the cross necessary. Did he know all along?”

Please read Ephesians 1:4-5
“…He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love.”

“before the foundation of the world”

It appears God understood that mankind would have the capability to choose sin. So in His great love, before the creation, He planned that if it should happen, there would be a safe haven for those who love Him. That safe haven is being ‘in Christ’ (v.3).

God didn’t predict sin, He predicted the plan that would be necessary, a perfect sacrifice, if man should bring sin into the world. This is beautifully foretold in Genesis 3:15, just after the fall of man, when God said to Satan, “I will put enmity between you and woman, and between your seed and her Seed. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” The only person in history, the only one who is uniquely the seed of woman (not of man and woman) is Jesus, born of Mary and of the Holy Spirit (Luke 1:35). This very early passage is the first shadow of the cross. Satan bruised Jesus’ heel with a painful crucifixion, but Jesus dealt Satan a mortal blow to the head with His death, burial, and resurrection!!!

Yours is a good question. It does not prove or disprove the image of the cross in cells of the body. We are guided by His Word in all things spiritual. However, even the unbeliever can see the hand of the Creator in the intricate, complicated design of all of things, including the human body. In that, we stand in awe, we bow before the Great I Am.

Blessings,
Teresa

For those questioning whether God knew Adam would fall. God is not limited to space or time like us. He knows and has known before Genesis all the way past Revelations from the very beginning. It does not play out in a day to day scenario like for us. He always has known what we would choose, He just let us choose. It is His great love for us that He planned for OUR (not His) failures.

Our pastor loves to tell us about how “science catches up with the Bible”, and he pointed out that the earth and everything on it, humans included, were in a perfect state—BEFORE the Fall. AFTER the Fall, Death entered the world, and as a result, natural physical chemical changes would have taken place. So in response to “Did He alter our chemistry after the fact?” I could say “Yes” and “No”–”Yes”, God altered human chemistry after the fact of the Fall, NOT of the Crucifixion. Remember, the first Messianic Scripture is Genesis 3:15–God planned for our salvation long ago.

Which came first the Laminin or the cross?

You are saying God made Laminin to look like a cross, but man, with all of his Laminin was on Earth before Christ. The cross may have been intentionally paralleled to another one of God’s creatios, Laminin.

In everything, we are to acknowledge Him, so it really doesn’t matter if it was intentional or not. We often use paralles to teach or children intangible ideas. Jesus was infamous for “paralleling” in His teachings.

Lamimin is not a sin, God created it, so observe what you will from it. But, BEWARE of any idea derived from man. If it is not laid out in the Bible, it is not of great value.

What it comes down to is we see what we’ve been trained to see. That applys to everything from when psychology used ink blots to artificial intellignec to racism. Our mind is wonderfully adapt at recognizing patterns (the reason you are reading this and not sounding out every letter) and the patterns are created after exposure to similar patterns. Without that mechanism we would have died in the stone age.

On an aside I find it amusing how when looking up “Laminin” on images.google.com all the images shaped like a cross are on religious blogs and all the images shaped more naturally and ambiguously are on university, medical and science websites.

  Gina wrote @

I think it’s way cool that Laminin–the stuff that holds us together–is the shape of a cross, which beared the Man who holds us together. It is not the be-all end-all of the Christian faith, by any means, but I definitely think it’s cool, and possibly more than mere coincidence.

The part of this original article that caught my eye the most, though, was at the end, where Mudpuppy (?) states, “…thinking that God designed it that way on purpose leads me to believe that he expected man to fall at the very start, making the cross necessary. Did he know all along?”

I apologize if someone has tackled this question already, but in short–YES. There is no way I can explain all the paradoxes and go into significant detail, but even though God gives us free will, and even though God can and does intervene directly in our lives when we call on His name, God knew our actions from the very beginning. This is not easy to believe, because it means he knew that that man over there would become an alcoholic, and that that woman would suffer in an abusive relationship for 10 years before she got help, and that thousands would die in skyscrapers overrun by terrorists, etc. I am not here to explain why He lets that happen because we will never fully know until we reach Heaven.

BUT–what I can declare with certainty is that God is sovereign. Scripture declares that “God ordained or willed or planned everything that happens in our world from before creation, from before time began.” (Mark R. Talbot, from Suffering and the Sovereignty of God)

In Rev. 13:8, “John writes, ‘all who dwell on earth will worship [the beast], everyone whose name has not been written BEFORE THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD in the book of life of the Lamb that was slain.’ That is a good, literal translation. This means that before the world was created there was a book called The Book of Life of the Lamb That Was Slain. The Lamb is Jesus Christ crucified. The book is the book of Jesus Christ crucified. Therefore, before God made the world he had in view Jesus Christ slain, and he had in view a people purchased by his blood written in the book. Therefore, the suffering of Jesus was not an afterthought, as though the work of creation did not go the way God planned. Before the foundation of the world God had a book called The Book of Life of the Lamb That Was Slain. The slaying of the Lamb was in view BEFORE the work of creation began.” (John Piper, from Suffering and the Sovereignty of God.)

In short, God didn’t make a mistake. He knew Adam and Eve would fall, and He knew He would have to crucify His Son to reconcile us to Him–all before He even created the world.

Does this idea go beyond your typical understanding? Probably. I highly recommend reading the book I quoted, entitled Suffering and the Sovereignty of God. The first three chapters are especially good.

Others have already tackled the “before the foundation of the world” thing, so I won’t belabor it any further except to point out that the serpent on the staff was also a prefigure of Christ’s death on the cross (John 3:14). The whole creation declares the glory of God. I have no trouble believing that this is yet another “oh cool” that He put here for us to find.

Should we derive doctrine from it? Of course not. His Word is the only source of such things. Can we marvel that we are fearfully and wonderfully made? Absolutely.

Jesus is the “Lamb who was slain before the foundations of the world”. You must realize that God lives outside of linear time. He sees the end from the beginning and the beginning from the end. No, He had no need to alter our molecular structure. He already was the Lamb of God. And while we’re on the subject, just in case you’ve wondered about this too…….Lucifer knew Christ as the Lamb of God, the redeemer of mankind eons before Jesus came to earth in the flesh. How do you think Lucifer has been able to deceive mankind in various cultures by perverting the idea of the bread and the wine (Baccus, the Greek god of wine and other Greek mythological references), and the idea of the blood of the son (Ishtar and Tammuz ) and so on? Lucifer knew that Jesus would spill His blood as a propitiation for man’s sin. Because Lucifer and the angels cannot be redeemed, he’s always hated man and in his jealous rage set out to corrupt in the minds of men the plan of redemption by introducing perverted versions of it into ancient mythologies. This throws the atheists off as well as those who are seeking truth. They say, “Ah-ha! See, Christianity is just another myth.” And so, Lucifer’s plot has worked to deceive and to pervert by pre-empting the whole plan of God. Lucifer is a very brilliant cherubim, but he will be hung by his own patard. The thing is, God knows the hearts of every one of us. And those who truly seek Him in all sincerity, will find Him, regardless of Lucifer’s stumblingblocks. Hallelujah! Jesus is the Lamb who was slain before the foundations of the world. What a God is this?!
