Academy Awards

I never watch award shows for more than 5 minutes, but last night I ended up watching the Oscars from start to finish. It wasn’t half bad. The final award for Best Picture had me wondering how many winners I’ve actually seen. Turns out I’ve watched a little over half of the winners since I’ve been born.

*Movies I’ve haven’t seen in bold.

2007 – No Country for Old Men
2006 – The Departed
2005 – Crash
2004 – Million Dollar Baby
2003 - Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2002 - Chicago
2001 - A Beautiful Mind
2000 – Gladiator
1999 – American Beauty
1998 – Shakespeare in Love

1997 - Titanic
1996 – The English Patient
1995 – Braveheart
1994 – Forrest Gump
1993 – Schindler’s List
1992 – Unforgiven
1991 – The Silence of the Lambs
1990 – Dances with Wolves
1989 – Driving Miss Daisy
1988 – Rain Man
1987 – The Last Emperor
1986 – Platoon
1985 – Out of Africa
1984 – Amadeus
1983 – Terms of Endearment
1982 – Gandhi
1981 – Chariots of Fire
1980 – Ordinary People
1979 – Kramer vs. Kramer
1978 – The Deer Hunter
1977 – Annie Hall

1976 – Rocky
1975 – One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest

On a related note, I thought Juno and Gone Baby Gone deserved a lot more love. It’s interesting to see how the Academy gets fixated on certain films.

American Beauty should definitely be on your list of to-see’s. American Beauty is INTENSE and brilliant.

I think that No Country For Old Men deserved every bit of the attention that it got. I don’t think that this statement takes anything away from the other winners, it’s just that 2007 was a very good year for film.

@worshipguitarist: Yeah, I can’t speak to its greatness just yet. Next Tuesday night I will be able to have a much more educated response! :)

I believe this year’s Oscars were the least watched ever in 80 years—something like 14% worse than previous worst broadcast. I didn’t watch it myself. The only movie I saw that was nominated was There Will Be Blood, and although Daniel Day Lewis did an excellent job, the movie as a whole was horrendous. Hollywood is out of touch with reality.

Yeah I agree American Beauty should be on your list. It takes a time or 2 to really come around it though but just an incredible movie.

Rae and I sat down and watched Moulin Rouge and Chicago in the same weekend and unfortunately watched Moulin Rouge 1st. It ruined Chicago for us. I know I should like it but I absolutely adored Moulin Rouge.

It still cracks me up that Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture. I think that’s hilarious. It’s a fun watch though. The chick flicks that we both enjoy we own and that’s one of them.

You need to see Million Dollar Baby. That is an excellent movie, probably one of my Oscar favs.
