McStarbucks 2008

mcstarbucks.gif

I’ll have a more in-depth post on my aspirations for 2008 soon enough, but this warrants a post of its own. I have decided to get radical and go a whole year without two staples in our society—McDonalds & Starbucks.

That’s right. For an entire year I am going to avoid two of the biggest franchises in the world. I was originally going to call it a boycott, but I really don’t have a problem with either. I’m not calling it a fast, because it’s not spiritual in nature. Basically I just want to see if I can do it, but I do have some legitimate reasons as well.

McDonalds — The two biggest reasons I’m avoiding McDonalds this year is 1) it’s not the greatest food in the world for my health, and 2) it’s simply too easy to settle for this option. My small little town has a McDonalds, and a Subway. That’s it. It’s a 12 minute drive to the next town that has a few more options, so too often I just go to McDonalds to save time and money. This year I’d like to see how this choice effects my life and my health. I’m sure it’s going to bother those around me, but I guess thems the breaks.

Starbucks — Admittedly this won’t be as tough because there are no Starbucks around me, but I always stop by when I’m near one. The reason for this choice is that I think it’s ridiculous to pay $3.00 for a coffee. Seriously. In 2008 I plan on drinking more coffee than I have in my life. I’m just not going to be paying out the nose for marketing. I’ve come to find a love for brewing Dunkin Donuts brand coffee with French Vanilla creamer. That should do the trick.

We’ll see how I do. Are you taking any radical steps this year?

In 2008, I don’t plan on buying anything that will go “obsolete” unless I absolutely must. This includes most technology stuff like cameras and computers. We’ll see how I fare!

I don’t frequent Starbuck’s, though there are at least a half-dozen here in Waco. When I do go, I usually get a French Press of coffee (because that’s the only way they’ll usually serve their one fair trade flavor) which yields 3-4 cups of coffee. it has cost me from $3-5, making it relatively reasonable.

What are you going to do when the McRib is in town? Mmmm.
    Is there a BKRib?

    Good Luck!

  4. mudpuppy Says:

I just might have ate enough of those during this past promotion to get me through the year… :)

  5. Stef Says:

Good luck for sure, Mud. Starbucks is an easy conquer for you. McD’s on the other hand….hhmmmm……

    Keep us updated!

    ITS SUICIDE!

Around here, a medium coffee at Starbucks is $1.80.

But the local establishment has better coffee (at the same price). I wish we had a Dunkin Donuts — I love their coffee (as well as their donuts).

I still can’t believe you all still get McRibs. We haven’t had those in Oregon for several years - I love those stinkin’ things! I don’t frequent Starsucks. Oopsies, did I say Starsucks? Shoot-darn, there I go again :D

Drastic steps? Exercise. Great! Now it’s in writing

    Happy New Year!

What?!?! I just discovered Starbuck’s joy-in-a-cup earlier this year! I can’t give it up so soon. It would go against my principles. MMMM vanilla bean frappichino’s. But, at least, I’ve been able to control my urges to once a week. Happy New Year!

  10. Jon Lloyd Says:

Dr Pepper or any other soda. Gone. I’ve already got a 8 week head start though. November 2 was my last cup of DP. It shall continue though…

  11. pete Says:

Giving up mcd’s. and just after you learned that they were giving away a free cup of thier premium cafe coffee on Weds. Or is that promo over now.

  12. mudpuppy Says:

Pedro- I thought about adding an amendment to this plan, but in the end of the year I want to say I didn’t buy one item from Mickey D’s.

Jon- Coke and/or Dr. Pepper were both very close to being on this list. I’ve chosen to instead limit them to a maximum of one can or bottle or glass per day.

  13. Greg Allen Says:

    Dude,
I am so with you on this one. Thanks for the suggestion.

I kind of already started on the MCD’s thing in December. Great idea.

I am also contemplating eating mostly only things I have to prepare (as opposed to boxed / packaged things)

  14. mudpuppy Says:

Coincidentally, I passed 2 Starbucks this afternoon while dropping something off in Ann Arbor. I have to go back on Thursday and Friday too. So much for not ever seeing a Starbucks…

Greg - You might enjoy the book I just finished reading, Water With Lemon.

  15. Sg4jc Says:

incidentally, I haven’t had McD’s since leaving MI. Too many great little restaurants in Melbourne to eat fastfood ever again. Especially to sushi joint’s.

Radical steps for 2008? Yup…I’m moving my business from Walgreens to Target (for prescriptions, etc.). Reason? Rude remarks from employees and a testosterone-deficient manager who acts as if it aint a big deal. HINT: It IS a big deal to be rude/inappropriate to customers! And after ten years of my business.

I came to this decision over a period of around ten days. The nearest Walgreens is 1/2 block from where I live, while the nearest Target is about 3 miles. The extra gasoline expense is worth it to make my point about just how wrong it is to be rude to a long-term, loyal customer`.

  17. mudpuppy Says:

New dilemma has arrived. Seeking advice.

Jason brought a bag of Starbucks into the office. Should this count or not count?

    Perplexed.

    -Mud

  18. overactivefork Says:

IMHO: This does NOT count…as long as you did not spend the money to purchse the Starbucks goodies. :-)

  19. Tom3 Says:

It will only not count if you made that a stipulation in your proposition. If you didn’t yes of course this DOES count! Don’t tell me your already starting to waffle.

[...] McStarbucks Update Well, I’m just about a month into my McDonalds / Starbucks experiement. [...]

  21. howshouse Says:

it’s really tough to do a mcd’s fast for me here. where i work, the nearest food outlet is a mcd’s… to get any other food, it’s a good 15 minutes drive away. i’m not against mcd’s anyway so i guess it’s alright. good luck with your 1 yr fast

  22. mudpuppy Says:

@howshouse: I have the same issue with food options. That’s part of the reason I was trying this experiment.

So far so good on both fronts, although I’ve been really craving a Big Mac and their Southern style Chicken Sandwich a lot lately!
