Love Wins

Maybe you haven’t noticed the simple sticker that rest on the back windshield of both of my vehicles, but I’m positive hundreds that have driven behind me have seen this very effective message. Love Wins. In any and all circumstances, Love Wins. The Bible is littered with examples and demands of love. It’s the key to everything.
Love Wins. Doesn’t it all boil down to that?
The stickers were inspired by a sermon by Rob Bell a few years ago about the cross and the ramifications of Jesus’ love. At the end of the sermon he passed out handfuls of stickers to everyone in the congregation. You can now not only see those stickers scattered all over Grand Rapids and Western Michigan, but they have been spotted all across America.
Can you imagine if everyone had those stickers on their cars? Can you imagine if we all lived as if that were true? I can tell you for certain that that sticker has already effected my driving. Knowing that phrase is sitting back there has directly influenced how I have reacted to some pesky drivers. Actually, I’m with Rob Bell, who says rather than need it on his own car, he needs it on the car in front of him, on the forehead of the people he’s talking to, in the mirror, etc.
Order some stickers for your own car. The first one is free, and if you send them a check for $1.00, they’ll send you a few more.

If you have some time, listen to this very uplifting sermon that inspired the phrase. If you would like me to make you a CD version, let me know.

You know, I cannot think of a single example in my life where showing love caused me to lose! One thing for certain is that God IS love and if we want to be more like Him then we WILL love. B4T

While reading your post…I’m reminded of a song called “Love is a Verb” Unfortunately, in the english language, we have watered down the meaning of the greek word for love.
People love their cars, houses, pets, and new DVD’s. They also love their spouses, kids, friends and other family members. Surely they don’t love their spouse in the same way they love their new toy? I’d be curious how your blog readers would in fact define the word love as it is used in the expression love wins.
Also, what is it that love wins? I think once we define what love is…we will know what love wins.

I was wondering if you knew where I could find the other sermons that Rob preached on “The Cross”? I know that Love Wins was the first one in a series, and I have been trying to find the follow ups to that tremendous message. Any suggestions? Thanks!

AL - They must intentionally make things obscure over at the Mars Hill website, so without downloading this to be sure… I think this is the series it comes from.

I don’t agree that love “always” wins.
and neither does she: http://www.tracygroot.com/newsletter/2004/0721.shtml

I listened to the sermon in its entirety, at the request of a friend who wanted me to hear it before I dismissed the whole concept . . . and I just still can’t get my mind around it . . . it seems too simplistic somehow. I am going to try to listen to it again and see if I can hear more in the message . . . but I just don’t know . . .

Comment for laterain - The message concept is that IF U live your whole life w/ this concept it follows in Jesus path. And THIS IS a Winning way to live your life. The bumper sticker is a reminder for U to live this way NOT for the rest of the World to follow.

[...] It was a great night and I didn’t look at my watch once. I love a good story told well. Especially one that’s true and offers that sort of hope. You can truly come out of that one saying Love Wins. [...]

hello fellow WordPresser,
There’s a new bumper sticker out! I don’t so much disagree that love wins I just think that it is, like many bumper sticker too simplistic and doesn’t represent the Biblical balance of truth and love. Mars Hill likes their “revolution of love” but they are trouble in the truth arena…. “embrace mystery” says Bell, what’s that about? (none other than postmodern, anti-gospel trickery)
Also, when I consider that a teacher like Rob Bell avoids the topic of God’s wrath** I wonder if he truly can appreciate how loving Jesus Christ’s sacrifice of atonement really is. I can tell you that if God is surely angry at sin and that I was under His wrath before I was saved that makes Christ so much more precious! Grace so much more amazing! And love so much truer!
**I attended Mars Hill for a year and a half before God graciously opened my eyes to the compromising that is going on there. Two quick stories”
- I was in a worship service where worship lyrics were deliberately changed in the song “In Christ Alone” from “the wrath of God was satisfied” to “the path to God was opened wide”
- One of my friends mentioned that one morning when she attended the church service the worship leader basically said, “Let’s stop worshiping God for a moment and praise each other… tell someone next to you something nice.” (pretty blatant humanism)
yeah…. Rob Bell is really NICE, and Mars Hill is a really NICE place. They also are both straying from sound doctrine and leading people into false loosing or false binding in contrast with what Jesus and his apostles teach in Scripture.
